A harbour-based stay
Palau without a car: beaches, ferries and boat days
A car-free holiday in Palau works best when your accommodation, meals and boat departure are in the same small area. The harbour gives you access to La Maddalena and archipelago excursions; it does not make every Gallura beach a short walk away.

The short answer
Stay within a comfortable walk of Palau port, plan one beach day nearby and reserve a separate day for the islands. Check both ends of every bus journey before booking accommodation.
Choose your address before choosing a beach
Search for the actual accommodation entrance, not only “Palau” in the listing. An outlying resort can turn dinner, luggage storage and an early boat departure into separate transfers. Ask the host about the walking route with suitcases, gradients and the final stretch after dark.
For a first stay, prioritize a base from which you can reach the harbour and everyday services on foot. Compare the room saving outside town with the cost of the transfers you would actually need. A rental-free trip still needs a transport budget.
Olbia to Palau: read the calendar on route 601
ARST’s current route 601 timetable includes Palau, Arzachena, Olbia and the airport. Individual services have different termini and operating-day codes. Use the date filter and inspect the exact boarding stop; a bus serving Olbia does not automatically serve the airport on that departure.
The municipal travel page also describes journeys involving a change in Olbia. Allow for baggage collection and the connection, then check the return for your flight day. Save the chosen stop and service details offline rather than relying on a screenshot of a summer timetable.
Keep a local beach day simple
The municipality identifies La Sciumara as reachable on foot from Palau. Check your route from the accommodation and bring the water, shade and sun protection you need for the outing. Walking access does not promise step-free access, calm water or a lifeguard on your date.
Porto Pollo and the more remote coves need a separate transport plan. Do not choose a distant beach because a map pin looks close across the bay. If a taxi or seasonal bus is necessary, settle the return arrangement before leaving town.
La Maddalena ferry or archipelago excursion?
A foot-passenger ferry takes you between Palau and La Maddalena town. Delcomar’s booking form lets you select passengers without a vehicle. You can spend the visit around town; reaching another island beach may require another bus, taxi or excursion.
A sightseeing boat is a different booking, with its own meeting point, itinerary and weather policy. For a car-free stay, verify that the departure is in Palau and walk to the meeting point the evening before. A ferry ticket alone does not include stops at Spargi or Budelli.
A practical three-night outline
Use arrival afternoon for check-in, groceries and harbour orientation. Give the next suitable day to the archipelago, then keep the remaining full day for La Sciumara or La Maddalena town. This is an editorial outline, not a promise that the weather will fit that order.
Keep the departure morning free of an excursion. Before paying for a boat day, ask about check-in time, the exact quay, included fees and what happens if wind changes the route. Leave enough flexibility to swap the beach and boat days.
Palau’s coastal setting: choose accommodation by its real walking route to the harbour.
La Maddalena town is a ferry destination; the remote island beaches need another transport plan.
