An island day on land
Caprera in one day from Palau: museums, beaches and transport
Caprera rewards a different kind of island day: a ferry to La Maddalena, a crossing to Caprera and time for one main visit. Decide whether history, a coastal pause or a reserved guided walk is the priority before filling the afternoon.

The short answer
Choose the Compendio plus one nearby stop for a simple day. With your own transport, consider the separate Memoriale; reserve protected-cove access as a different, time-consuming outing.

One island, three different kinds of day
A Caprera land visit is not an archipelago boat itinerary. The ferry gets you to La Maddalena town; you still need to reach Caprera and return. A sightseeing boat may pass an island shore without giving time for its museums or inland roads. Choose the experience first, then the appropriate ticket.
For a first visit, make one fixed appointment the centre of the day. Leave the remaining time for lunch, travel and a flexible short stop. Combining two museums, a distant beach and a long guided hike usually creates more transport pressure than useful time at each place.
| Priority | Shape of the day | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| History without a car | Compendio and La Maddalena town | Dated bus and museum slot |
| History with transport | Compendio and Memoriale | Separate openings and travel between sites |
| Coastal outing | One permitted coastal stop | Actual walking access, conditions and return |
| Protected-cove hike | Reserved guided excursion | Park rules, guide and meeting time |
From Palau through La Maddalena to Caprera
Buy the correct passenger or vehicle ferry ticket from Palau. After landing in La Maddalena, the bridge gives access to Caprera. The museum’s current visitor information describes a public-transport stop for the Compendio, but the separate Memoriale is not served by that public service. Verify the actual bus date and return before choosing the car-free version.
With a car, first check the ferry conditions and where stopping is allowed near your destination. Do not treat road edges or a museum name on a map as guaranteed parking. With a bicycle, assess your own ability, route and conditions; crossing the bridge does not make every later section a gentle family ride.
Compendio or Memoriale: choose deliberately
The Compendio includes Garibaldi’s home and surrounding complex; the Memoriale is a separate visit at Forte Arbuticci. Their visitor arrangements differ. Official listings do not fully agree on weekly closure and combined-ticket details, so use the current museum booking calendar for your day and confirm any discrepancy before traveling.
Build the morning around the entry slot you actually obtain. Then decide whether the second museum adds enough for your interests to justify the transfer. If traveling without a vehicle, a Compendio visit followed by La Maddalena town is a simpler plan than assuming a bus continues to the Memoriale.
A suggested day with room to enjoy it
Morning: take a ferry that allows a comfortable connection and reach your booked museum visit. Late morning: finish the visit before deciding on an optional nearby stop. Lunch: keep it flexible rather than adding a prepaid activity that depends on every earlier connection.
Afternoon: with transport, choose one permitted coastal stop or the second museum. Without transport, return toward La Maddalena using a confirmed service and explore the town before the ferry. This is an editorial sequence rather than a timed transport package; adjust it to the actual calendar, daylight and conditions.
Cala Coticcio is a separate reservation
Cala Coticcio and Cala Brigantina have regulated access through protected TA zones. The park describes authorized guided visits and a park contribution separate from the guide’s fee. An island ferry ticket or the fact that another path appears on a map does not authorize entry.
If Cala Coticcio is the main aim, organize the authorized guide, meeting place and transport before adding a museum. Ask about the walk, equipment and return time. Do not improvise a protected trail when a beach plan changes; the park also publishes trails that are described historically but are not open for general use.
What to bring and what to check before leaving
Carry water, sun protection and footwear suited to the confirmed walking route. Save the museum ticket, ferry information and return instructions offline. Keep time for the journey back to Palau, especially if your next connection is a bus or flight.
In wind or rain, reassess the outing with the transport operator and destination. A land itinerary on another island still depends on crossing the sea. If a connection or site closes, choose a shorter town day rather than trying to preserve every stop. For an archipelago beach circuit, use the boat-tour comparison instead of treating this land route as an equivalent product.
The bridge connects La Maddalena and Caprera; allow for onward land transport.
Caprera’s coastal scenery: choose a permitted stop rather than assuming every cove has the same access.
