Cala di Trana
Two hundred metres of pinkish sand between granite headlands west of Palau, with nothing on it but the beach itself.
What it’s like
A short curve of pinkish sand set between two large granite outcrops, with wind-shaped dunes behind it. There are no beach clubs, sunbed rentals or bars, which is the point: on a quiet day it feels far further from town than it is.
Getting there
From Palau, take the road west towards Porto Pollo and turn towards Costa Serena; a dirt track leads towards the beach, and the last part is a walk. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the end of the road. You can also arrive by sea.
Nearby
Porto Pollo, 3 km away, has bars, rentals and the windsurf and kite schools; the coves of Talmone are on the same stretch of coast.
Questions people ask
Are there any facilities at Cala di Trana?
No. There are no bars, sunbeds or toilets: bring water, shade and food, and take your rubbish away.
Can I drive to the beach?
Not all the way. A dirt track leaves the road to Costa Serena; the last stretch is on foot. Allow about 15 minutes by car from Palau to the end of the road.
Is it suitable for children?
The sand is fine, but the walk in and the lack of shade and services make the town beaches of Palau Vecchio and La Sciumara easier with small children.
